He started his acting career at the relatively young of 15 initially in action role type figures but eventually became typecast in figures of authority such as judges, policeman, military officers etc. He appeared in such typical roles in two films alongside Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne; in Dead of Night released in 1945, he played the role of Harry Parker (pictured), whilst in the film A Girl in a Million released the following year in 1946 he played the part of the General.
His first film in 1922 was Long Odds, but it wasn’t until 1930 whem he next appeared in a film, namely Night Birds which was about a master criminal named Jack Flash. He made almost 130 film appearances including The Man They Couln’t Arrest 1931, Number Seventeen 1932, It’s A Cop 1934, Scrooge 1935 – he played Belle’s husband, Bank Holiday 1938, the George Formby film Let George Do It 1940, Pink String and Sealin Wax 1945, I See A Dark Stranger 1946, Frieda 1947, Someone At the Door 1950, Madame Louise 1951, Man Of The Moment 1955, Those People Next Door 1956, and Who Done It in 1956. He also had a productive TV career during the 1960’s which included appearances in The Forsyte Saga amongst many others.
He died 6th March 1981.
