One of her first leading role film appearance was in David Lean’s Blithe Spirit in 1945 where she played the role of Madame Arcatti. Her jaunty performance, cycling about the countryside, head held high, back straight, and cape fluttering behind her, established the model for portraying that role thereafter. This is typified in her role as Professor Hatton Jones (pictured) in the 1949 Ealing Studios classic Passport to Pimlico; this film also featured Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne as two civil servants Greg and Stryker.
Other films that the actress appeared in include Hideout in the Alps 1936, Catch as Catch Can 1936, Three Wise brides 1941, Yellow Canary 1942, The Importance of Being Earnest 1946 and 1952, Miranda 1948, The Happiest days of Your Life 1950, The Magic Box 1951, Miss Robin Hood 1952, Trouble in Store 1953, Just My Luck 1957 and I’m Alright Jack 1959.
In the 1960’s she performed the role of Jane Marple in a series of Agatha Christie Miss Marple films; Murder She Said 1961, Murder at the Gallop 1963, Murder Most Foul 1964, Murder Ahoy 1964, and The Alphabet Murder 1965.
She died in 1972 at the age of 80.
