Amongst the many films that he appeared in he played the part of the Anglican Bishop in John Ford's The Quiet Man (1952). He got his nickname, 'Bish', filming this movie - when he came off the set during one scene, some nuns thought he was a real Bishop and they wanted to kiss his ring.
Other films that he appeared include; Nightbeat (1947), The Blue Lagoon (1949), Don’t Ever Leave Me (1949), The Elusive Pimpernel (1950), Hobsons Choice (1954) where he played the part of Denton, The Ladykillers (1955), Cast a Dark Shadow (1955), and Reach for the Sky (1956).
In several films he was typecast as a police officer including his appearance in the 1949 Ealing Studios classic Passport to Pimlico where he played the part of PC Spiller (pictured).
