Hyma Beckley

The prolific and ubiquitous British bit-part actor Hyma Beckley was born 27th August 1911 in London. He first started appearing in films in uncredited minor roles in the late 1930's often cast as reporters, party guests, or passengers on ships, trains, or airplanes.  He died at age 92 on 13th April 2004 in London.

During the 1930’s and 1940’s he appeared in such films as Old Mother Riley in Paris (1938), They Drive by Night (1938), I Thank You (1941), The Gentle Sex (1943), Night Boat to Dublin (1946), The Courtneys of Curzon Street (1947, Another Shore (1948) and his final one of that era was 1949’s Passport to Pimlico where he played the role of ‘Man in Crowd’ (pictured).

During the 1950’s he appeared in Madelaine (1950), Made in Heaven (1952), The Good Die Young (1954), Father Brown (1954), The Man Who Knew too Much (1956), The Iron Petticoat (1956), After the Ball (1957), The Safecracker (1958), A Night to Remember (1958), Room at the Top (1959) and Upstairs and downstairs (1959).

Some of the other films that he appeared in include; No Love for Johnnie (1961), Greyfriars Bobby (1961), Carry on Cruising (1962), Crooks Anonymous (1962), Summer Holiday (1963), Georgy Girl (1966), The Plank (1967), Run a Crooked Mile (1969), Scrooge (1970) and as a Floor Show Audience Member in 1975’s Rocky Horror Picture Show.  His final appearance was in The Muppet Christmas Carol in 1992.

.The Austrian born British actor Frederick Schiller was born 23rd August 1901.  With appearances in more than seventy films over four decades he will be well recognised by film fans, albeit most of his appearances were in minor roles.  He died on 29th September 1994.

His first film appearance was in 1938’s The Lady Vanishes where he played the uncredited role of a ‘Man at Zolnay Station’ (pictured).

Given his background, film directors generally cast him as German soldiers or other ‘foreigners’ in films such as The Captive Heart (1946), Counterblast (1948), Highly Dangerous (1950), The Colditz Story (1953), Reach for the Sky (1956), Lady of Vengeance (1956), Blue Murder at St Trinian’s (1957), The Trollenberg Terror (1958), Operation Amsterdam (1958), Sink the Bismarck! (1960) and The Dirty Dozen (1967).
