Stanley Holloway

Stanley Holloway was born on 1st October 1890.  Born in London, Holloway pursued a career as a clerk in his teen years. He made early stage appearances before infantry service in the First World War, after which he resumed his acting career, initially on the stage in musicals and variety but particularly noted for his comedic monologues.

During WW2 he appeared in numerous propaganda shorts morale boosting films including Major Barbara 1941, This Happy Breed 1944, The Way Ahead 1944, Brief Encounter 1945.
 
In 1949 he played the part of Arthur Pemberton (pictured) in Ealing Studios Passport to Pimlico.

Other films that he appeared in include Meet Me at Dawn 1947, The Perfect Woman 1949, The Lavender Hill Mob 1951, The Titfield Thunderbolt 1953, Jumping for Joy 1956, No Love for Johnnie 1961 and Ten Little Indians 1965.  In 1964 he starred in the award winning My Fair Lady as Arthur P. Doolittle.

He died 30th January 1982.

Jonathan Field

​Jonathan field was born in London on 28th September 1912.

He started his film acting career in the 1930’s making appearances in films such as Behind Your Back 1937, Paid in Error 1938, He Found a Star 1941 and Salute John Citizen in 1942.

In 1943 he had an uncredited part as ‘an ugly youth’ in Millions Like Us.
 
He had a prolific film career throughout the 1940’s and 1950’s and moved in to TV productions in the 1960’s.  Films that he appeared in include: Give Us the Moon 1944, I’ll Be Your Sweetheart 1945, Fools Rush In 1949, She Shall Have Murder 1950, One Stop Shop 1953 and High Terrace 1956.

He died 1990.

Wally Patch

Wally Patch the English actor and comedian was born 26th September 1888.  He began working on the music hall stages in 1912 and eventually progressed to film and TV work.  His first film appearance was in 1928, and he went on to appear in 213 other films.  He worked up to his death, with his last television appearance in the comedy Doctor in the House in 1970.  He died 27th October 1970.
 
Just a few of the many films that he appeared in include: The Scotland Yard Mystery 1934, Dusty Ermine 1936, Pygmalion 1938, Bank Holiday 1938, Inspector Hornleigh on Holiday 1939, They Came by Night 1940, Cottage to Let 1941, Unpublished Story 1942, The History of Mr Polly 1949, The Naked Truth 1957, Operation Cupid 1960 and The Bargee 1964.
 
In 1940 he played an uncredited part of a Fisherman (pictured) in the Charters and Caldicott (played by Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne) film Night Train to Munich.  In 1949 he appeared in another film which featured the two actors  - he played the part of the BBC Commissionaire in the comedy film Helter Skelter.

His TV appearances include Dancers in Mourning 1959, King of the River and Who is Sylvia both 1967.

Morris Harvey

Morris Harvey the English actor was born 25th September 1877.

The actor was quite active during his relatively short film career appearing in several films throughout the 1930’s and early 1940’s.  Some of more well-known films that he appeared in include: Down Our Street 1932, Sing as we Go 1934, Squibs 1935, Scrooge 1935 – he played the part of the poulterer with the prize turkey, Dreams Come True 1936, The Sky’s the Limit 1938, She Stoops to Conquer 1938 and Let the People Sing 1942.  He also appeared in two Old Mother Riley films – Old Mother Riley in Business 1942 and as barnacle Bill in old Mother Riley Overseas in 1943.

For fans of Charters and Caldicott, he played the part of the Waiter (pictured) in 1940’s Crook’s Tour.

He died 24th August 1944 in Glasgow.

Hugh Cross

​The English actor Hugh Cross was born 24th September 24 1925 as Cecil Hugh Cross.  He was a well-known TV actor throughout the 1950’s to the 1980’s but he also had a film career during the 1940’s.
 
His first appearance was in the uncredited role as the ’Man at the Dance Hall’ (pictured) in 1943’s Millions Like Us which co-starred Patricia Roc, Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne. 
His other film appearances include: Warning to Wantons 1949, Spring Heeled Jack 1950, Seven Days to 1950 and Svengal in 1954.  He also appeared twice as William’s older brother – Robert Brown - in the two 1940’s Just William films, Just Williams Luck and William Comes to Town.  Interestingly he played the part of Williams father – Mr Brown in the 1970’s TV series of Just William.
 
Just a few of his many TV parts included appearances in 1958’s Starr and Company, The Men from Room 13 1961, 1963’s The Desperate People, Orlando in 1966, The Flaxton Boys 1970 and Brett in 1971.
 
He died 14th May 1989.

Grace Arnold

Grace Arnold was born 19th September 1894 in London; she died 26th February 1979.


She had a very productive film and TV career spanning 5 decades from her first film appearance in 1939’s Men Without Honour which starred Ian Fleming through to her final TV appearance in a 1975 episode of Angels.

She mainly appeared in un-credited roles in her first few years but she made her name due to her appearances in British classic films such as Went the Day Well 1942, The Way Ahead 1944, Hue and Cry 1947, Jassy 1947, The History of Mr Polly 1949, Brandy for the Parson 1952, Those People Next Door 1953 and Child in the House 1956 which starred Phyllis Calvert and Eric Portman.

She is pictured here in her un-credited role as the ‘Woman on the Tube train’ in 1949’s Passport To Pimlico.

Her TV acting career included appearances in: The Grove Family, The Cheaters, Emergency Ward 10, The Prisoner and as Mrs Hudson in 1968’s Sherlock Holmes.

Jack Hawkins

The British actor jack Hawkins was born in London on 14th September 1910.

In total he appeared in 92 films making his first film appearance in 1930.  In 1932 he played the role of John Martin in the first sound remake of The Lodger - the Hitchcock silent classic inspired by the Jack the Ripper legend starring Ivor Novello.
Of his many other films that he appeared in, the notable ones include Lorna Doone 1934, Murder Will Out 1939, The Fallen Idol 1948, The Black Rose 1950, The Cruel Sea 1953, The Prisoner 1955, The Bridge on the River Kwai 1957, Ben-Hur 1959, The League of Gentlemen 1960,  Lawrence of Arabia 1962 and Zulu 1964.

Whilst military service during WW2 interrupted his film career he still managed to appear in a propaganda film Next of Kin in 1942 where he played the role of Brigade Major Harcourt (pictured).  The film also featured Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne.

He died 18th July 1973 following an operations three months earlier to install an artificial voice box.
