HG Wells or Herbert George Wells to give him his full name was born 21st September 1866.  The prolific English writer published hundreds of pieces of work across many genres, including, novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, satire, biography, and autobiography, including even two books on war games. He is best remembered for his science fiction novels and is often called the "father of science fiction".

Many of his novels were turned into films including Kipps (1941), The History of Mr Polly (1946), War of the Worlds (1953 and other versions), The Time machine (1960) and First men in the Moon (1964).  One of his short stories - The Story of the Inexperienced Ghost – was used as the basis for ‘The Golfing Story’ segment in 1945’s Dead of Night; the two golfing partners, George Parratt and Larry Potter, were ably played by Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne.

HG Wells died 13 August 1946.
