CV France or Charles France

CV France, or Charles as he was known to close friends, was born 30th June 1868. The Yorkshire born actor appeared on stage and in dozens of British films between 1910 and his death on 13th April 1949, usually playing military or stuffy establishment figures. One of his roles was as Admiral Hassinger in the Charters and Caldicott film Night Train To Munich in 1940, pictured below.

Some of the other films he appeared in include Blue Bird (1910), The Loves of Robert Burns (1931), The Skin Game (1931), Black Coffee (1931), Lord Edgeware Dies (1934), Scrooge (1935), Victoria The Great (1937), The Ware Case )1938), A Yank At Oxford (1938), If I Were King (1938), Cheer Boys Cheer (1939), Ten Days in Paris (1940), Went The Day Well (1942), Halfway House (1944) and It Happened One Sunday (1944).

Stop Press Girl

One of the last films that Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne appeared together in was Stop Press Girl In 1949. The film starred Sally Ann Howes as an attractive young woman who is unaware of her powers to disrupt all machinery in close proximity to her. Radford and Wayne play the 'Mechanical Types' - these are not just two roles but are 10 in total. The two actors play 5 parts each.

Basil Radford was born on 25th June in 1897 in Chester.

He was one half of the comedy actor duo, Charters and Caldicott with Naunton Wayne famous for their roles of Charters and Caldicott in The Lady Vanishes (1938), Night Train To Munich (1940), Crook's Tour (1940) and Millions Like Us (1943). The comedy duo appeared as similar characters in other films including Dead of Night (1945), A Girl In A Million (1946), Quartet (1948), it's Not Cricket (1949), Passport To Pimlico (1949), Stop Press Girl (1949) and Helter Skelter (1949).

​The duo also had a successful radio and stage career appearing as similar characters.​

The British actor started his acting career in 1922; other films that he appeared in include Barnum Was Right (1929), Seven Days Leave (1930), A Southern Maid (1933), Jump For Glory (1937), Young and Innocent (1937), Trouble Brewing (1939), Jamaica Inn (1939), Unpublished Story (1942), The Way To The Stars (1945), The Winslow Boy (1948) and playing the role of Captain Waggett in Ealing Studios comedy Whisky Galore (1949),  which has just been remade with Eddie Izzard playing the part made famous by Radford.

His health began seriously to fail during 1951, forcing him to take a long break from acting. He died at St George's Hospital, London, on 20th October 1952, from liver failure due to cirrhosis of the liver.

Naunton Wayne

Naunton Wayne the actor was born 22nd June 1901 in Glamorgan Wales; he was one half of the comedy acting duo, Charters and Caldicott along with Basil Radford.
​

Probably his most famous role was as Caldicott in Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes (1938) and he went on to reprise the role in other films: Night Train To Munich (1940), Crook's Tour (1941) and the WW2 home front film Millions Like Us in 1943.  The comedy duo appeared as similar characters in other films including Dead of Night (1945), A Girl In A Million (1946), Quartet (1948), It's Not Cricket (1949), Passport To Pimlico (1949), Stop Press Girl (1949) and Helter Skelter 1949.

Other films that the Welsh actor appeared in include Going Gay (1933), A Girl Must Live (1939), Double Confession (1950), Happy Family (1952) and The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953).

He also had a successful stage and radio career both in his own right and also in the comedy duo with Basil Radford.

He died 17th November 1970.
