John Chandos

The Scottish actor and writer John Chandos was born 27th July 1917 in Glasgow.

He appeared in over fifty film and TV productions between the early 1940’s and late 1960’s including the role of a secret agent No. 16 (pictured) in the 1942 WW2 film that Churchill tried to ban – Next of Kin.

Other films that he appeared in include The 49th Parallel in 1941, The First of the Few 1942, The Haunted 1948, Secret People 1952, The Long Memory 1953, Simba 1955, The Ship That Died of Shame 1955, The Green Man 1956, Doctor at Large 1957, The Little Ones 1965 and Two Gentlemen Sharing 1969.

He died 21st September 1987.

H. Victor Weske

H. Victor Weske was born in 1899 on 20 July. 

He started his acting career initially on stage before progressing into silent films and eventually ‘talkies’.
In addition to his role as Ted in the 1942 WW2 propaganda film Next of Kin, he appeared in Love on the Dole 1941, Tower of Terror 1941, The Day Will Dawn 1942, The Goose Steps Out 1942, Went the Day Well 1942 (pictured), The Bells Go Down 1943, Medal for the General 1944, Appointment with Crime 1946 and Send for Paul Temple 1946.

He died 29th November 1960.

Stuart Lindsell

​The British actor Stuart Lindsell was born 18th July 1892 as Reginald Stuart Lindsell.  He started his film acting career in 1939 playing the part of General Flanco De Fortinbras in Geneve and went on to appear in dozens more films throughout the 1940’s and 1950’s often in upper class roles or figures of responsibility – a typical one was his appearance as The Coroner (pictured) in 1949’s Passport to Pimlico.
 
Other notable films that he appeared in include: as Earl Spencer in Young Mr Pitt 1942, Fanny by Gaslight 1944, as Colonel Appleby in The Man from Morocco 1945, Night Boat to Dublin 1946, as Major Phillips in Lilli Marlene 1950, West of Zanzibar 1954 and as Sir Henry Danier in Colonel march of Scotland Yard 1956.
 
He died in 1969.

Mary Clare

Mary Clare Absalom was born 17th July in 1892, the second of five daughters, to George Alfred Absalom and Annie Louise Austin. Mary Absalom first worked in an office but a loan of £50 allowed her to train at a dramatic school and she began her thespian career as Mary Clare on the London stage at the age of 18 in 1910.  In the theatre, she became one of Noël Coward's "leading ladies" appearing in several of his plays.

She started appearing in films during the silent era of the 1920’s until her first major sound movie - the 1931 Hindle Wakes, as Mrs Jeffcote; a role which she was to repeat in the 1952 remake. She appeared in two Alfred Hitchcock films, Young and Innocent, (1937) playing a nightmare of an aunt who demands that everyone enjoy themselves at her young daughter's birthday party, and The Lady Vanishes, (1938) in which she played the sinister baroness (1st photo).  Two of the actors who featured alongside her, basil Radford and Naunton Wayne – went on to appear with her in the 1942 British WW2 propaganda film Next of Kin – she played the part of Mrs Ma Webster (2nd photo) a matronly Nazi Spy.
 
Other films that she appeared in during her long career include: The Constant Nymph 1933, Lorna Doone 1934, The Mill on the Floss 1937, in the title roles of Mrs Pym at Scotland Yard 1939 and Miss Grant Goes to the Door 1940, Old Bill and Son 1941, London Town 1946, Oliver Twist 1948, Moulin Rouge 1952 and The Price of Silence 1959.

She died 29th August 1970.

Beatrice Varley

The British actress Beatrice Varley was born in Manchester on 11th July 1896.  She made her screen debut in the 1936 film Tomorrow We Live and began to portray a variety of character roles, typically downtrodden housekeepers, landladies etc, in British films before moving predominantly into television until her death in 1964.  One of her typical roles was as Miss Wells (pictured) in Millions Like Us in 1943.

Just a few of the many films that she appeared in include: Hitchcock’s Young and Innocent 1936, Oh Mr Porter 1938, When We Are Married (1938) Kipps 1941 (she played the part of Mrs Kipps and re-played the role in the 1960’s TV series), George Formby’s South American George 1941, Secret Mission 1942, We Dive at Dawn 1943, Waterloo Road 1945, Johnny Frenchman 1945, as Aunt Moll in The Wicked Lady 1945, Send for Paul Temple 1946, Holiday Camp 1947, No Room at the Inn 1948, Gone to Earth 1950, Hindle Wakes 1952 (and again in 1957), The Black Rider 1954, The Feminine Touch 1956, Hell Drivers 1957 as Stanley Baker’s mum), The Horrors of the Black Museum 1959 and The Rough and the Smooth 1959.

Nancy Gabrielle

The actress Nancy Gabrielle was born 6th July 1917 in London as as Nancy Honor Gabrielle Lankshear.  She was most widely known for her work on British TV during the 1960’s and 1970’s but she started her acting career in the 1940’s.  One of her first appearances was in Passport to Pimlico in 1949 – she played the part of Mrs Cowan (pictured) – Sydney Tafler’s on-screen wife. 

Other films that she appeared in include: She’ll Follow You Anywhere 1971 and The Black Windmill 1974 which starred Michael Caine.

Her TV work included many bit parts including appearances in The Four Seasons of Rosie Carr 1964 (as a tart), The World of Wooster 1966 (as Mrs Penworthy), 1960’s Z Cars (two roles), Villains 1972 (as Mrs Parkin),  Doctor Who 1973 (as a prisoner), The Changes 1975 (as Mrs Sallow) and as a dressmaker in a 1981 episode of Bergerac.

She died on July 29, 1998
