He is often nicknamed the Master of Suspense, the English Director and Producer had a career spanning over half a century, It would be an injustice to list his films if it didn't include every single one.
However, a favourite film of his for many people, which was also the last British film before he left the UK for Hollywood, is of course The Lady Vanishes. He is pictured here in one of the closing scenes as Charters and Caldicott (played by Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne) arrive back in London following their exploits with the military controlled countries in late 1930's Europe. It was following this film that Hitchcock received the only ever award for film direction, when he won the New York Film Critic's Circle Award for Best Director. The Guardian described Hitchcock"s The Lady Vanishes 'one of the greatest train movies from the genre's golden era.
Unquestionably the greatest British filmmaker, he did more than anyone to shape modern cinema.
He died 29th April 1980.
