Born in Hayfield in Derbyshire, he started his acting career shortly after the end of WW2. One of his first roles was in the Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne film Stop Press Girl in 1949 where he played the uncredited part of Archibald (pictured).
Other films that he went on to appear in include Kind Hearts and Coronets 1949, Cage of Gold 1950, The Last Appointment 1954, Two Grooms for a Bride 1955, The Green Man 1956, Follow That Horse! 1960, This Sporting Life 1963, The Bed Sitting Room 1969, Fragment of Fear 1970, No Sex Please: We’re British 1973, Man About the House 1974 and Sweet William 1980.
His TV appearances include Coronation Street, Doctor at Large, The Last of the Baskets, Its Murder But is it Art, Mr Men, Potter and Bless Me Father. Obviously his most famous role was as the pompous and bumbling Captain Mainwaring in the Dad’s Army TV series and film.
In addition to the connection with Charters and Caldicott in the Stop Press Girl film, Arthur Lowe appeared in the role of Charters in the 1979 remake of The Lady Vanishes starring Cybil Shepherd as Iris and Angela Lansbury as the title role. His ‘partner’ of Caldicott was played by Ian Carmichael.
He died 15th April 1982.
