His film career started in the early 1930’s in films such as Falling For You and Crime on the Hill – both 1933. In 1937 he appeared in Will Hay’s Oh Mr Porter! As the Express train driver. He generally played the parts of ‘minor officials’ – such as a policeman in The Stars Look Down 1940, a German officer at the Customs desk in Pimpernel Smith 1941, a sailor in Johnny Frenchman 1945 and a court usher in The Smugglers 1945.
He appeared alongside Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne four times – in 1939's The Lady Vanishes he was the train fireman (1st photo) as the British escaped from the Bandrikans, in 1941’s Crook's Tour he played the part of the manservant at the castle (2nd photo), the part of Mr Palmer in Next of Kin 1942 and the Attendant in A Girl in a Million 1946 (3rd photo).
Other films that he appeared in include The Flemish farm 1943, Jassy 1947, The Good Companions 1949, High Treason 1951, You Lucky People 1955, Colditz Story 1955 and The Piper’s Tune 1962. Probably his most well-known roles was as Bob in The 49th Parallel in 1949.
