Back in England he kick-started his acting career appearing in dozens of film and TV productions over 5 decades until his death in 1982.
During his acting career, he specialised in playing irrepressible cockney characters such as the role of a Sapper in Passport to Pimlico (1st photo) in 1949 which featured Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne as the two civil servants Greg and Stryker – he appeared alongside the two actors in another of their films in Stop Press Girl in 1949 (2nd photo).
Just a few of his many other film appearances include The Captive Heart 1946, Vengeance is Mine 1949, The Blue Lamp 1950, Pool of London 1951, Brandy for the Parson 1952, The Titfield Thunderbolt 1953, Father Brown starring Alec Guinness in 1954, The Ladykillers 1955, Reach for the Sky 1956 (picture 3) Carry on Admiral 1957, in the 1959 version of The 39 Steps and The Iron Maiden in 1962. His final film appearance was in 1981 in Eye of the Needle.
He appeared in many TV productions including Coronation street as Frankie Baldwin, various roles in Sykes, as Mr Walton in Crossroads, various roles in Dixon of Dock Green and Z Cars and also as Orlando O’Connor in Crane and the spin-off Orlando.
